Adidas Holiday 2012 campaign – The Cautionary Tale of Ebenezer Snoop

Welcome to the bizarre world of adidas’ 2012 holiday campaign, inspired by our favourite Dickensian Christmas story.

Snoop is officially my favorite celebrity persona of this year. A couple of months after announcing that he had shrugged off the name ‘Snoop Dogg’ in exchange for something more spiritual – ‘Snoop Lion’ – he has reinvented himself once again as ‘Ebenezer Snoop’, the grumpy Christmas-humbuger of Charles Dickens’ classic British novel ‘A Christmas Carol.’

I refuse to believe that he isn’t the embodiment of seasonal cheer and goodwill in real life, but in this instance he cuts a pretty good Scrooge.

The full adidas campaign is crammed with high-profile names from music, sport and the celebrity world including David Beckham and Rita Ora, and ends with the opportunity for viewers to create their own Christmas Carol story through Facebook.

“The film features global music heavyweight Snoop Lion alongside skateboard OG Mark Gonzales, escorting viewers into the illustrated world of legendary Beavis & Butthead artist JJ Sedelmaier. ‘The Cautionary Tale of Ebenezer Snoop’ follows the path of the classic English Holiday story ‘A Christmas Carol’ by Charles Dickens, seeing Ebenezer Snoop confronted by the Ghosts of Holiday Past (Stan Smith), Present (David Beckham) and Future (Derrick Rose & Rita Ora). The film also features global adidas stars Jeremy Scott, Dani Alves, Joe Tsonga, Steve Aoki, Yohan Blake, Andy Murray, Dwight Howard and many more. As the film ends, you return to Facebook to create your own Ebenezer Snoop story.

The Facebook application takes you on a personalised journey of what could become if you don’t change your ways – Snoop might not be the only Ebenezer! By aggregating your user data around certain Facebook activities such as commenting and event responses, adidas creates your uniquely tailored Ebenezer film. At the end of your journey Adidas offers you the opportunity to redeem yourself by sending a greeting card featuring JJ Sedelmaier’s campaign illustrations to friends – spreading Christmas adidas discounts and cheer to all.”
