For the last six years, the gorgeous city of Miami Gardens has hosted a two day "Grown Folks Music " festival. Known to the general public as 'Jazz In The Gardens', this show has gained national attention through Michael Baisden's syndicated radio program.
Hosted on March 19-20,2011 by DJ Irie, Prince Markie D, Michael Baisden and his comedic sidekick George Wilborn, the show was well organized and never dull. Housed at the Sun Life Stadium ,this outdoor festival often rings in a sunny first two days of spring. With artists such as Boyz II Men, Mary J.Blige, Erykah Badu,Melanie Fiona, & the late Teena Marie as previous performers, the show has proved itself to bring a classic vibe while welcoming newcomers into the festival with open arms.
The 2011 lineup included local Reggae/Soul band Jahfe, the legendary Al Jarreau, Head of State ( Bobby Brown , Ralph Tresvant, Johnny Gill), Charlie Wilson, and R&B songstress Lauryn Hill, and that was only day one! Day two welcomed Lalah Hathaway, Sy Smith Branford Marsalis, Musiq Solchild, En Vogue, Gladys Knight and a reunited Isley Brothers duet. The party was a nonstop reminder of a different type of r&b, "the romantic r&b" said Gladys Knight before covering 2010 guests Boyz II Men's 'End of the Road'.
During the show; vendors of southern, latin and caribbean food provided the smells and taste to accompany the sounds. While old school classics like Frankie Beverly & Maze's 'Cant Let You Go' rang through the speakers, the crowd gathered in the aisles to dance while waiting for the next act to hit the stage. Although JIG is a celebration, the festival is actually a two day health initiative for the African American community. The mayor of Miami Gardens presented a short speech bringing to light disparaging Cancer statistics while raising funds for the Relay for Life.
This is my second year in attendance and I recommend that you come along next year to enjoy some classic music and positive energy while surrounded by people who really came to have fun.
