This record focuses on the fear of failing when it comes to our goals in life, and fighting tooth and nail to survive life's ills.
If your father performed alongside Funk & Soul legends like James Brown & Sam Cooke, and your older sibling was deep into Hip-Hop production, chances are being a product of your environment meant only one thing… Following the path his family set before him, Chicago-based Hip-Hop artist Neak draws vivid verbal portraits which find inspiration in the spirit of 1980’s Hip-Hop & U.S. culture. The “War on Drugs,” failing Reaganomics, and increasing violence within poverty stricken areas only strengthened the resolve of the then fledgling Hip-Hop movement, and it’s this concept of perseverance and reclamation that guides Neak’s artistry.
Since 2010, Neak has released two volumes in his ’84 mixtape series (8000 total downloads), both of which are hailed as “underground classic[s] with an electric/soulful feeling, and rooted in the core of hip-hop." Currently Neak is fresh off a release of his newest project "Neak Rock," a Pete Rock tribute album presented by DJBooth.Net, Fake Shore Drive, Refined Hype, Prefix Mag & YNotMyDream; which has currently reached over 50,000 downloads and counting! Recently fresh from releasing his #illRaps Series (featuring artists such as Slot-A, Pugs Atomz, Sincerely Yours, Mike Schpitz, etc.) He is now currently working on his next project entitled, "Love Greater // The Prequel," with production from Slot-A, INTLMC, Rashid Hadee. This upcoming project will be presented/sponsored by DJBooth.Net, Earmilk, and Prefix Mag.
Naming Nas, Mos Def, Common, Lupe Fiasco, MF Doom, Elzhi, Jay-Z, etc. as his main lyrical influences, Neak preserves the aesthetics of real Hip-Hop; authenticity, originality, excellence all evoke a heartfelt emotion for listeners of his music. Neak is looking to tour in support of his "Love Greater // The Prequel" project; which is scheduled for release early 2012."Artist|| Neak [ twitter.com/#!/Neak_Undefined ] Song|| Big Dreamer Feat. Artist Spotlight : Robin Thicke
Alright, I feel I want to let a few more people know about this guy.I am a massive fan, and very few people seem to have heard of him. Robin Thicke is the son of the incredibly popular actor Alan Thicke and one of the few great soul singers of this generation. He is a close friend with Lil' Wayne, so you may recognize him from a few Weezy tracks. Taking inspiration from the greats such as Marvin Gaye & Al Green etc, over the years Robin has crafted a unique sound whilst still retaining these influences. Whilst he is considered a mainstream artist, I feel he doesn't get enough attention considering his talent. He has released 4 albums (one under the name of "Thicke") all of which have a different spin on his sound. Ranging from straight up soul, to Hip-Hop with R&B influences, Robin manages to craft solid albums one after the other without making his audience lose interest. He often gets compared to Justin Timberlake due to his recent use of Falsetto on the majority of his recent work. Although, besides that, I can't see too many comparisons. So, I ask. What do you guys think of Robin Thicke?Mayer Hawthorne Reveals his Holiday Playlist
Besides wrapping up presents for your loved ones and cold weather, December also brings forth the annual share of multiple "best of" music lists. We sure have put lots of dedication in naming the 50 albums that matched our taste, but we have not dedicated lots of thought on what to play during the upcoming holidays. Luckily, Mayer Hawthorne has recently revealed his special Christmas playlist during an interview with AskMen.com.
I'm definitely listening to the James Brown "Soulful Christmas." That is the ultimate holiday party music. I've been bumping a lot of boogaloo stuff lately, like my man Chris Montez's “Let's Dance.” It's like funky, gritty dance music. There's a new joint I discovered recently -- this group called Jigsaw from back in the day. It doesn't really fit into any category I know. It's a song called “One Way Street” from Jigsaw. That's definitely party music. Of course you've got to put some Mayer Hawthorne in the mix. I always put “Henny & Gingerale” on at every party because it's all about Henny & Gingerale. That's my favorite cocktail. That's what I'm serving at my holiday party. I love Frank Sinatra -- anything from Old Blue Eyes is gonna do the trick. You gotta throw some Barry White in the mix. It always gets the ladies in the mood, and when the ladies are in the mood, everybody is happy. I always play a lot of Detroit ghetto tech and booty and... stuff like DJ Assault and DJ Deeon. That'll get the party started every time. “Ass 'n' Titties,” baby -- everybody loves ass and titties.
